32 million workers are exposed to 650,000 hazardous chemicals. Chemicals in the U.S. exceed $450 Billon and exports exceed $80 billion. The agency OSHA is implementing GHS at this time in an effort to make "global" standards. The standards for the U.S. may not be the same as with other states and also not be the same with what is being reported in other parts of the world. Pictorials can be read any in language and proper cautions can be taken.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) adopted the GHS as a modification to the Hazardous Communication Standards including training standards on new label classification criteria, reading and understand the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) format and recognizing pictograms. Understanding newly regulated hazards like combustible dust and "Hazards not-otherwise-classified (HNOC).
All employees who use any chemical for cleaning a window, table,or a corrosive product such as used on the dish or laundry machines must be trained no later than December 1,2013 and any new employee must be trained within 90 days of employees hire date.
Items such as flammable liquids are just an "example" of a health hazard. Employee should learn to recognize pictograms, know where SDS sheets are kept (by law must be on site), know how to read the SDS sheets and take precautions as stated on the SDS sheet including getting medical attention where necessary. Hazardous chemical means any chemical which is classified as a physical hazard or a health hazard,a simple asphyxiant, combustible dust, pyrophoric gas or a hazard not-other-wise classified (HNOC).
Hazards materials are broken down into different classifications. Classification 1is more severe than classification 2 and 2 is more severe than 3 etc. Aerosols, due to explosive potential can be classified as a 1or a 2 depending upon its contents.
The most important things for you to know is where is the Safety Data Sheets kept, according to the SDS what must I do, if anything, to protect myself and what treatment do I take if an accident does arise.
